How long does homemade apple sauce keep?

Homemade apple sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for about a week, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To store in the freezer, let the apple sauce cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag. Squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing the bag or container. When you are ready to use the apple sauce, thaw it in the refrigerator or in the microwave.

If you want the apple sauce to last longer, you can also can it using a water bath method. Canned apple sauce will last for about a year if stored in a cool, dry place.

What to add to applesauce to make it taste better?

  1. Add spices: Try adding a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice to the applesauce to give it a warm, aromatic flavor.
  2. Add sweeteners: If the applesauce is not sweet enough for your taste, you can add a little honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar to sweeten it up.
  3. Add other fruit: Try adding a cup of berries, such as raspberries or blackberries, to the applesauce for a burst of flavor.
  4. Add herbs: Fresh herbs, such as rosemary or thyme, can add a unique flavor to applesauce.
  5. Add a splash of citrus juice: A squeeze of lemon or orange juice can add a bright, tangy flavor to the applesauce.
  6. Add nuts or seeds: Chopped nuts or seeds, such as almonds or sunflower seeds, can add a crunchy texture and a nutty flavor to the applesauce.

Why do you put lemon juice in applesauce?

Lemon juice is often added to applesauce to help preserve the color and prevent the apples from turning brown. Apples contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, which oxidizes when the apples are cut and exposed to the air. This process causes the apples to turn brown, much like how a cut apple turns brown when left out on a counter. The acidity of the lemon juice helps to inhibit the enzyme, which helps to keep the applesauce looking fresh and bright.

In addition to helping to preserve the color, lemon juice can also add a bright, tangy flavor to the applesauce. If you prefer a more subtle flavor, you can add just a small amount of lemon juice, or you can omit it altogether.

What kind of apples are good for apple sauce?

  1. Braeburn: These apples have a sweet-tart flavor and hold their shape well when cooked, making them a good choice for apple sauce.
  2. Granny Smith: These apples are tart and firm, which makes them a good choice for apple sauce because they hold their shape well when cooked.
  3. Honeycrip: These apples are sweet and juicy, and they have a creamy texture when cooked, making them a good choice for apple sauce.
  4. Jonathan: These apples have a sweet-tart flavor and a tender texture when cooked, making them a good choice for apple sauce.
