Do you put eggs in cheese scones?

Yes, eggs are often used in cheese scone recipes as they help to bind the ingredients together and provide richness. The amount of egg used can vary, but a common ratio is one egg for every two cups of flour. You can use either whole eggs or just the egg yolks, depending on the desired richness of the scones. Some cheese scone recipes also call for a beaten egg to be brushed over the tops of the scones before baking, which gives them a shiny, golden finish.

Why are my cheese scones dry?

  1. You may be using too much flour. It’s important to measure the flour accurately, as too much can lead to dry, dense scones.
  2. You may not be adding enough liquid. Cheese scones can be dry if there isn’t enough moisture to balance out the dry ingredients. Make sure you’re using the right amount of liquid called for in the recipe, and consider adding an extra tablespoon or two of milk or cream if the dough seems too dry.
  3. You may be overworking the dough. Overworking the dough can result in tough, dry scones. Mix the dough just until the ingredients are combined, and handle it gently when shaping the scones.
  4. You may be baking the scones for too long. Scones should be baked just until they are set and starting to turn golden brown on the edges. If they are baked for too long, they can become dry.
  5. You may not be using enough fat. Cheese scones are often made with butter, which helps to add moisture and flavor. If you’re not using enough fat, your scones may be dry.

Is milk or water better for scones?

Both milk and water can be used in scone recipes, and the choice of which to use will depend on the desired texture and flavor of the scones.

Milk will add richness and flavor to the scones, as well as a softer, more tender texture. Whole milk or heavy cream will give the scones the most flavor and richness, while using lower-fat milk will result in scones that are slightly less tender and moist.

Water, on the other hand, will not add any flavor to the scones, but it will still help to hydrate the dry ingredients and bind the dough together. Scones made with water will generally have a slightly more dense texture than those made with milk.

In general, milk is the preferred liquid for scones as it adds flavor and moisture. However, if you’re looking for a lighter, lower-fat option, you can use water in your scone recipe.

What do you serve with cheese scones?

  1. Butter and jam: Serve scones warm with butter and your favorite fruit jam or preserve.
  2. Clotted cream: Clotted cream is a traditional accompaniment to scones, particularly in the UK. Spread a generous amount of clotted cream over the scones and enjoy.
  3. Soup or chili: Cheese scones make a great side dish for a bowl of soup or chili. They can also be served with stews or casseroles.
  4. Salad: Serve cheese scones with a salad for a light and refreshing meal.
  5. Tea or coffee: Cheese scones are a popular snack to enjoy with tea or coffee, particularly in the afternoon.
  6. Chutney or relish: Serve cheese scones with a flavorful chutney or relish for a tangy and spicy contrast to the rich, cheesy scones.
