  4. If you are using the blackcurrants in a recipe that calls for them to be used whole, such as a fruit salad or a topping for ice cream, you can skip the crushing step. Simply place the whole blackcurrants in a bowl and set them aside until you are ready to use them.

How do you keep crumble topping crunchy?

There are a few steps you can take to help keep crumble topping crunchy:

  1. Use cold butter: The fat in the butter helps to create a crisp and crumbly texture in the topping. Be sure to use cold butter and cut it into small pieces before adding it to the dry ingredients.
  2. Don’t overmix: When making the topping, mix the dry ingredients and butter together just until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Overmixing the topping can cause it to become tough and chewy.
  3. Bake at the right temperature: The temperature of the oven can affect the texture of the topping. A higher temperature will cause the topping to become more crisp and crunchy, while a lower temperature will result in a softer, more cake-like texture.
  4. Let the crumble cool: Once the crumble has finished baking, allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help the topping to set and become crunchy.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your crumble topping stays crunchy and delicious. Enjoy!

Can I use plain flour instead of self raising for crumble?

Yes, you can use plain flour instead of self-raising flour in a crumble topping. If you are using plain flour, you will need to add some leavening agent, such as baking powder, to help the topping rise and become light and crumbly. Here’s how to make a crumble topping using plain flour:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and baking powder.
  3. Add the butter to the dry ingredients and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
  4. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit filling in an even layer.
  5. Bake the crumble for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly.
  6. Allow the crumble to cool for a few minutes before serving.

This crumble topping will be slightly denser and more cake-like than a topping made with self-raising flour, but it will still be delicious! Enjoy!
